How did El Molinar come about?

El Molinar has gradually become one of Palma's favourite neighbourhoods.

It began with the nucleus of fishermen's houses in the bay of Portixol and the flour mills in the area, almost all of which have now been destroyed.



What are the main attractions of Molinar?

Its large and quiet bay offers sun from sunrise to sunset creating exceptional postcards.

The Molinar/Portixol promenade is an ideal area for outdoor activities, continuing the coastline of the seafront, but immersing itself in the tranquillity of a traditional, almost exclusively pedestrianised neighbourhood with very little vehicle traffic.


What type of tourism can we find in El Molinar?

El Molinar is a residential neighbourhood. The first line is gradually being updated in a contemporary style without losing the charm of the area, which still conserves the traditional low fishermen's houses.  From Portixol to La Gruta you won't find hotels, only bars and restaurants, where you can enjoy a beer or a coffee with a spectacular sunset.

It is an area where you will find many Mallorcan residents but more and more Swedes, English and Germans are choosing to buy and settle in this quiet and picturesque neighbourhood.



What activities take place in El Molinar?

The paseo del Molinar has a double-lane bike path that links the centre of Palma with Ciudad Jardín to Can Pastilla and connects to Platja de Palma. It is a very busy area for cyclists and skaters.

Its beaches are quiet, as you won't find sun loungers or fixed umbrellas here. This beach attracts mainly locals and young families who enjoy the transparent waters.

For the little ones you will find two playgrounds, one recently opened in front of the port of Molinar (currently under renovation) and another in Ciudad Jardín just in front of the beach and surrounded by bars where you can enjoy a coffee while the kids have fun.

In the last few years several establishments have opened with activities related to personal care and wellbeing such as Yoga del Mar. A very exclusive place designed especially for foreign residents where you can enjoy traditional yoga and Yoga on Paddle surf, meditations, various styles of massages and many more activities.  Studio Yoga Mallorca, located on the first floor of the Vent café also located on the front line of Molinar, is known for offering different yoga modalities such as Beach Morning Yoga every Sunday.


The Duet Sports Portitxol, where facilities include multiple indoor swimming pools, paddle tennis and tennis courts, as well as various fitness options.

You can also enjoy Cross-fit Portixol one of the largest and most modern crossfit rooms in Mallorca.

Club Náutico Portixol also offers a variety of sailing courses for all ages and levels to enjoy the sea. The club is also a real social centre and a focus for festivals, regattas and fishing competitions held throughout the year.

What gastronomic offer can be found in El Molinar?

In the beautiful promenade of el Molinar you will find a wide gastronomic offer.


Mala Madre, at the beginning of the Portixol promenade, is a fresh proposal from Palma Ocio that combines flavours and textures from different parts of the world to create unique and different dishes.

Among the most traditional in the area we find Ola de Mar which is a favourite among residents thanks to its fresh market fish, its fabulous paella and the personal attention of its owner and renowned Chef Guillermo Cabot.


The Restaurante del Club Náutico Portixol also offers excellent seafood along with a large seating terrace, as does the neighbouring restaurant Sa Roqueta.

If you want to enjoy a more informal dinner, sit in one of the cafés directly overlooking the bay Es Vaixell being a favourite with the locals. Also overlooking the bay, the ever-popular Cocco is the best place to eat pasta with an exceptional view of the bay of Palma. Peripló, recently opened, offers a varied menu of tapas and cocktails that you will love.

Passeig del Born del Molinar is a quiet, tree-lined square where you can find quality tapas at  Vermuteria La Gloria and more seafood dishes at Can Tito

Along the waterfront, Izizi Nunnak combines urban chic with an unpretentious menu and an adults-only ambience. With its quirky vintage interiors and street food-inspired menu. Vent where you can enjoy different styles of poke bowls. La Tarantella with its Italian-style pizzas and MDQ which brings us classic Argentinian pastries, desserts and handmade ice cream.


Nightlife in Molinar/Portixol

El Molinar is the perfect place for a romantic evening. Enjoy a nice walk, watch the sunset on the beach and have dinner in one of the many restaurants in the area. Its bars are mostly tapas bars, with none dedicated exclusively to nightlife and certainly no discotheques.

So it makes an ideal area to relax after a day's work, have a drink or a cocktail and enjoy the peaceful evening scenery of the promenade.
