Have you awoken with the desire to escape to a tropical location? The Playa de Muro is the perfect place to make your dreams come true. With less than six kilometers long and located on the north coast of Mallorca, this sugar-sand beach and crystal clear, turquoise water will transport you to the Caribbean. Additionally, it is located near the S'Albufera nature reserve, home to many waterbirds. And, thanks to its soft sand and shallow water, it is an ideal location for families with children. Come and enjoy the Bay of Alcúdia and Playa de Muro, between the Puerto d'Alcúdia and Can Picafort stations.
The first sector starts at the Playa de Alcúdia and extends to the promenade, where there is a landing stage for excursions.
The second sector is located between the promenade and an area of virgin dunes along the coast, which is appreciated by nature lovers and individual tourists.
The third sector, called Es Comu, is a natural section of the beach with no significant infrastructure. There are no sun loungers or bar available, and it can only be reached after a long walk due to a lack of parking spaces nearby. In this sector, among others, nudism enthusiasts gather to swim and sunbathe in the dunes without clothing. The southernmost part of Playa de Muro is Es Capellans, bounded by a holiday home urbanization, and is very popular among Mallorca tourists visiting the lively town of Can Picafort.
During the summer, sectors 1 and 2, as well as sector 4 and the town of Can Picafort are popular among visitors. A popular gathering place is the Chill-Out Bar & Restaurant "La Playa", where you can enjoy a paella with sea views or have a cold drink. Often during high season, live music is offered. The relaxation furniture in front of the restaurant may seem a little old, but it is sufficient to enjoy the sun. Other beach bars are the "Balneario 3" and "4", which offer simple decor but with sea views from their elevated location.
The Playa de Muro is equipped with several barrier-free access points and umbrellas and sun loungers available for rent. During the main season, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., there are lifeguards on the beach ready to provide assistance if needed. This service is necessary due to the high waves that, even in August, can reach the coast and make bathing dangerous. In these cases, red flags are raised at the eight lookouts. Unpredictable ocean currents are also warned about, which can be dangerous for both swimmers and divers.
There are toilet facilities available throughout the beach and available for free use. The largest entertainment program for adults and children is located in sector 1, near the town of Puerto d'Alcúdia, with children's beach games and boat and banana rides. If you prefer quieter beach areas, it is recommended to visit Es Comu, but it is important to bring drinks and food as there are no beach bars or restaurants in this area, and there is no umbrella rental.
Playa de Muro offers a wide area of shallow waters, ideal for splashing around and relaxing in the warm water. If there are no high waves, even small children can safely play on the shore. If you want to swim in crystal clear waters, you will have to walk quite a bit to reach the deeper water areas.
Water sports can mainly be found in sectors 1 and 2, where pedal boats are available for rent to navigate along the shore, and banana boat rides can be taken. One of the latest trends in Playa de Muro is stand up paddle (SUP) rowing on a large surfboard within the shallow water zone, with the aim of exploring the beach from the water. Jet skiing, canoeing, and paragliding can also be practiced. In summer, it is also common to see sailboats and motor yachts on the sea, but they must maintain a respectful distance from the beach due to the extensive shallow water zone.
The Natural Park of S'Albufera is located next to Playa de Muro, covering an area of 1,600 hectares and being home to around 270 species of birds. Many tourists enjoy a change from their beach vacation by visiting this natural reserve characterized by large lagoons and shallow water areas where flamingos and wading birds feed. On the park's trails, the conservation agency has installed bird observation towers, so it is recommended to bring binoculars if you are near Playa de Muro to observe the birds from the ground. The entrance to the Natural Park of S'Albufera is on the road from Can Picafort to Alcúdia, where a bridge crosses the Great Canal of s'Albufera, which drains the wetland and opens to the sea at Playa de Muro. The starting point for tours and bike rides in this natural paradise is the Natural Park of Sa Roca Center, where you can learn about the flora and fauna of the place. If you prefer a guided visit, you can join a tour with a park ranger, which is always offered on Saturdays at a fixed time. Playa de Muro, with its white sand and crystal clear waters, is considered by many visitors as one of the most beautiful beaches on Mallorca, and if you are spending your vacation in the north of the island, you should not miss a visit to this dream beach.
