The area of Pere Garau and Marqués de Fontsanta is one of the most central and historic areas of Palma. Located in the eastern district, these neighbourhoods are two of the best known in the Balearic capital and are perfect for being close to all the benefits of the city while enjoying relative tranquillity.
These neighbourhoods, with 30,000 and 7,000 inhabitants respectively, were born out of the expansion of the old city of Palma at the beginning of the last century, when the wall surrounding them was demolished. Formed mainly by more urban buildings, you can find shops and restaurants of all kinds.
The market “Mercat de Pere Garau” is the main attraction here and the one that makes this neighbourhood most popular. It was founded in 1943, so it is of great cultural and historical interest. It's the perfect place to stroll around for a couple of hours and perhaps eat at one of the many prepared food places. As mentioned above, there are many shops of various kinds in this area, from hardware stores to hairdressers as well as restaurants and bars where you can have a drink with friends and spend the evening. Nuredduna Street is a highlight, where there is also a vibrant social life and plenty of shops to stroll around.
As for the Marqués de Fontsanta area, it borders the well-known Avinguda Alexandre Rosselló, where all the fashionable shops and El Corte Inglés department store are located.
Both neighbourhoods are perfectly equipped for family life, with public and state schools in the area, such as the IES Arxiduc Lluís Salvador in Font Santa, and the Colegio San Francisco de Asís in Pere Garau, as well as the well-known Language School “Escuela de Idiomas” de Palma, also public, where more than nine languages are taught, including English and German, and which offers official qualifications in this field.
As they are so centrally located, they have easy access to all the resources, shops and activities of the centre of Palma within a few minutes by car, on foot or by public bus transport. The Marqués de Fontsanta neighbourhood is next to the metro and railway service, which connects the centre with other parts of the city and with various towns, as is the case with the Sóller train.
As far as leisure activities are concerned, La Churrería la Artesana, in Pere Garau, is popular with the locals, a good place to spend the afternoon. There are several gyms available in these neighbourhoods where you can make use of machines and supervised activities. There is a public library in Pere Garau and within Marqués de Fontsanta there is the library “La Casa del Libro”, the next favourite place for book lovers.
The area of Pere Garau and Marqués de Fontsanta is perfect for city lovers and for those who like to have all the resources at hand. Pere Garau is more suitable for those who prefer a more neighbourhood atmosphere while Marqués de Fontsanta is close to the centre and one of the most important streets in Palma. In addition, there is a health centre in Pere Garau and access to Mercadona, one of the favourite supermarkets of Mallorcans. Being in the centre, it is very easy to get around on foot or by public transport.
